Penguin Prison - Don't Fuck With My Money

It might take a couple listens. But this track will grow on you. Penguin Prison has been up here a few times before and here he is again. He certainly has his own style. And it's a little quirky at first blush, but if you give it a chance you just might really like what you hear.

M83 - Intro (Feat. Zola Jesus)

Thanks Joe for the heads up. We were snoozing on this one. Another track released today for M83's upcoming album Hurry Up We're Dreaming due out October 18th. Can't wait.

Crystal Fighters - In The Summer

TCC has been beating down my door for months trying to get me to listen to these guys and I have no excuse for myself. They're fantastic. This video is absurd. And their sound is about as bonkers as their video. Prepare to have your face melted.

Quicksilver Pro Cancels Free Music (surf still on)

Irene is just the worst. Not only did she show up and fail to deliver on the epic scale she was predicted to. She leaves the party early after a sub par performance and she decides that she will mess things up JUST ENOUGH to ruin what's left of every one else's night. In this case, I mean to say that the music portion of the Quicksilver Pro New York has been cancelled according to this press release And that is a damn shame because they had put together a pretty ridiculous line-up. Irene - NYC

This is being called "The Most Beautiful New York Hurricane Footage You'll Ever See" by buzzfeed. How much New York hurricane footage is there anyway? Regardless, still well done and worth a look. Even if the "hurricane" was a total letdown.

Kiteboarding Irene

Now that's how you get some air time!

Nero - My Eyes

If you are reading this, then you survived Irene. That bitch. Anyways, something a little different for you folks today. This track is pretty big. I mean like, it seems to be a big deal. And takes itself very seriously. And you sort of have no choice but to listen. From the start you realize that they're not really messing around. The slow build gets you sucked in and then you're hooked. Nero's been bopping around the blogosphere making waves, but this their first post here. The London duo has a new album out and they are getting all kinds of daps and hugs. Anyways, give this track a listen. It's a little different, but I like it. Not sure why yet. Although I won't be offended if you don't dig it either. Certainly not for everyone.

Future Islands - Balance

Future Islands are back. And they have a nice change of pace to their sound this time around. Last time they were up on TMD was mid winter and they were slightly meloncholy and depressing but still very good. Their whole album was a bit dreary, but great for the middle of winter. Well, now they go ahead and release a perfect little summer tune in Balance. And they've got a new album coming out October 11. I love the bass line here. AndI'm not sure if I'm hearing steel drums in there or not. But regardless, it's delish.

Standing Sideways - A Burton Film (Trailer)

It's almost that time of year. Yes, it's August and you're still going to the beach. But before you know it. It's going to be winter. And before that, comes film season. We've already talked about the much anticipated Art of Flight. But, shockingly, there are other films coming out this fall. Namely, Burton's Standing Sideways. Judging from this trailer it should be pretty schweet too.

Matt & Kim + Soulja Boy + Andrew W. K. - I'm A Goner

Wait. What?

This is actually decent. It's not the train wreck I thought it would be. Come to think of it, I kind of like it. Yep. I do. And Andrew W. K. has a surprisingly good voice though he isn't very heavily featured on the track. I was just used to hearing him on tracks like "Party Hard"  in which he essentially bangs on a piano and screams.  It's pretty surprising to hear him actually sing here. I'll also be the first to admit that I loved Andrew W. K. when he realeased I Get Wet in 2001. America needed him and he delivered. Points for the out of nowhere collaboration. Brought to you by Converse. Weird.

Madeon - Pop Culture (live mashup)

File this under bonkers. Madeon never ceases to amaze me. He's 17 years old from France. And he churns out bangers like nobody's business. And he likes Daft Punk. He's just fine in my book. Here's a mashup of 39 songs he likes. I like them too.

Alex Winston - Velvet Elvis (RAC Remix)

R.A.C. is at once again. Hardest working producer in the game right now. And almost everything they put out is just solid. No two ways about it. Here they take Alex Winston's bubbly little jam for a spin and keep it in line with minor tweaks in tinkering. It works. And one of the things I like about R.A.C. is their ability to let the original trakc shine through without overwhelming and ripping it apart. Just adding what needs to be added in a tasteful way. Letting the artist shine through. Case in point:

Com Truise - Ether Drift

Terrible name aside Com Truise is good. He's based out of Jersey too! (That's two posts in a week for the Dirty Jerz!) We'll keep it to minimum from here on out I promise. His real name is Seth Haley and he's been up here before on some of the mix tapes I've posted, but this is his first outright post. I'll give you one guess as to why this is making the cut: I'll give you a hint: it rhymes with smynthesizer. Anyways, from the jump I liked this with the hectic synth pacing around, and it never really goes anywhere from there. But the synth on its own is enough for me. Some lyrics would have been nice and maybe a little more progression, but I'll take it for what it's worth.

Com Truise - Ether Drift by Voler

And here's a bonus track just for shits and giggles! It's also quite good.

Scattered Trees - Four Days Straight

It's been a while since we posted some good old fashioned rock and roll music here on TMD; and for that I apologize. Sometimes I get caught up in a genre and things get s little skewed. But here is a curve ball for you to knock out of the park. I present you with Scattered Trees hailing from Chicago. And guess what? They're playing Brooklyn Bowl on Wednesday! Talk about serendipity. Anyways, I love this track. It's simple but memorable and catchy. A very slow start gives it a bit of an edge, and it builds to a nice finish which leaves you wanting more. Check it out:

NatNaiel - Here I Am

NatNaiel is from Jersey. Don't hold it against him. He's got alot going on here. It seems a bit busy at times, but it works in the end. He's got a smorgasbord of genres going on here from hip hop to dubstep he spans it all. But it's still pretty good.

My Tiger My Timing - Endless Summer

My Tiger My Timing come to us from London. And they're fun. Their sound has been described as "alternative pop with a dark heart that's bursting with desire." I don't think I can beat that one. It's fun, catchy, dark and bubbly. Enjoy.

Music For Your Mind - Summer Mix Tape

From their soundcloud: After the release of our first compilation with artists like Connan Mockasin, Kisses, Motorama, Oberhofer,... We're back for a second tape, which is really inspired by summer, sun, beach (and maybe bitches too), and chill out. Once again we want to promote young artists, unknown artists that we believe in and that we support. We hope you'll discover and like them!

Sleep Over - Romantic Streams

So we've caught a common theme in the past couple posts here. I'm sorry if I'm not mixing it up enough, but there has been a flood of dream pop and chillwave coming through the press room over here at headquarters and it can't be denied. Anyways, Austin, TX  based Sleep Over is churning out some pretty heady dream pop. This is a pretty good example of that. It'll make you forget what time it is, and you'll feel pretty important listening to it. Cause it's smart. Check out their facebook page; it's super informative.

Gaunlet Hair - Top Bunk

Sounds like MGMT on acid. In a good way. Gauntlet Hair is another band to emerge from Lafayette, Colorado. Colorado is to the lo-fi / chillwave movement as Seattle was to grunge in the early 90's. There I said it. Anyways, this track has that far away but right here familiar sound. The distant guitars, the echoing vocals. It's good.

Neon Indian - Fallout Mix

Neon Indian was one of the first artists to get me into the chillwave movement that has continued to sweep the nation (or Brooklyn for that matter). He hadn't been on my radar for a while, but he's got a new album coming out September 13. And we should be eagerly awaiting its arrival. Here's a little snippet to wet your whistle. It captures everything that's great about his sound. Big sweeping sounds and synths that make you feel like maybe, just maybe, there's a soundtrack to your life.

Holy Ghost! - Holy Ghost!

So this album came out in April. Decades ago in blog years. And we recommended some songs for you to listen to at that time. But I wanted to point out if you haven't listened to it already that you most definitely should. But the real point of this post was to get you to listen to the last track on the album: some children. It features a slick bass line and some sweet synths and the crooning vocals of Mr. Michael McDonald. What else could you possibly need? Nothing. You need nothing else.

Goodwill & Hook N Sling - Take You Higher (Club Mix)

I was skeptical at first. It sounded too house-y for my taste to start. Then I realized what this was. It's a nice little remix of Angus & Julia Stone's Big Jet Plane. A solid tune on its own right. Gets the rerub here and it's good. Parts of it are still too house influenced for my liking, but as a whole, it's a nice tune. Put it on your boat or your beach playlist. Tell em where you're from.

New York City - From Below

Ever wonder what New York City looks like from the bottom of a moving skateboard? Well now you know. Good talk.

Sufjan Stevens Played Prospect Park

By Joe Housel Sufjan Stevens brought his neon-circus, wonder tour to Prospect Park yesterday for two final nights in support of his most recent album. Given the booming, electronic-orchestration hybrid that was crafted from Age of Adz, it was only appropriate for him to open up solo with the simple, elegant grace of “Seven Swans”. Once the remainder of the band entered midway through the track, the black screen protecting the stage was raised and the neon-drenched musicians and dancers took full flight as angelic wings sprouted from Sufjan’s back. His main set was nothing short of spectacular as they marched through Age of Adz nearly in full. Highlights included “Too Much” featuring the bizarre, backing music video for the studio release (here) and the epic 25-minute closer, “Impossible Soul” accompanied by dozens of clear beach balls that burst into the energetic crowd. The backing band’s vibrant sounds and dancers’ rhythmic motions highlighted Sufjan’s majestic voice perfectly while guiding the 70-minute set to conclusion. The encore dialed back the grand scale theatrics but was nothing short of beautiful with three wonders from Illinois: “UFO”, “Casmir Pulaski Day” and the sing-along specialty, “Chicago”.

I was surprised at how heavy the show was focused on the new material but given the complex performances from the entire ensemble, it was a pleasant surprise to watch the scope of it all come to life on a beautiful Tuesday in Brooklyn. My Brightest Diamond, an Asthmatic Kitty label-mate, was the opener but I didn’t arrive in time to see her live act. Shara Worden (aka MBD) might as well be the female Sufjan as she is a multi-tenanted artist who focuses on overlapping classical and folk genres. Rumor has it; she was on-stage later with Sufjan as a backup singer. This would make perfect sense as she was one of the Illinoismakers during his 2005 tour.

A neon and electronically enhanced Sufjan Stevens was on display last night and whether you were in the audience or picnicking in the park outside the fences, you couldn’t help but be dazzled by this cosmic space pageant.

Little Dragon - Crystalfilm

It's pretty haunting how good this is. Simple. Raw. Repetitive. Subtle. Good. Little Dragon has been cranking out solid electro and synthpop for a lot longer than I've known about them (1996). Jose Fuego turned me onto them, and as usual he was spot on. And they're from Sweden, so you know they're awesome and extremely easy to look at. Anyways, give it a listen. It's solid.

From Skateboards to Spectacles

Experiment No. 1 - Skateboard Shades from Shwood Eyewear on Vimeo.

This is a pretty cool idea. If you ever wondered what to do with your board once you snapped it in half out of frustration because you realized that you can't physically do what you can do in Tony Hawk's skateboarding for Nintendo 64, then here you go. Even if you never wondered what to do with a broken skateboard. Now you know.

Teen Daze & Others Played Glasslands

By Joe Housel As the sun faded across Manhattan skyline, I knew something special was waiting in that magical land of Brooklyn where the jeans fit tight and the mustaches know no bounds. I came ready for a relaxed Sunday night show filled with melodic beats and uptight Brooklynites too cool to dance but something else was in the air. After a whirlwind of Rolling Rock tallboys and warm whiskey shots to boot, I stumbled home in the rain with a freshly broken phone and two questions. Where did this intense live performance from Teen Daze come from and what has he done to my understanding of chillwave?

Glasslands Gallery has to be one of my favorite venues in the city. Right off the Bedford L stop by the river, it combines the feel of an intimate, back alley warehouse with just enough modern amenities to not scare off your sheltered friends. We arrived in the middle of Monster Rally’s set as he was busy performing his modern take on elevator music. We were busy getting settled so I wasn't able to generate much of a feel for him as a musician or performer. After he thanked the crowd as prepared his “final song” on upwards of five separate occasions, it was time to move onto Brothertiger.

John Jagos, (aka Brothertiger) is another one-man show dishing out all the chillwave and synthpop you desire with that distinct Midwestern flair (what?). Hailing from The Ohio State University, he was quick to inform the crowd that once he wrapped up his set, he had to haul ass back west in order to make class tomorrow morning. If that isn’t dedication to your craft, I don’t know what is. His sounds ranged from sonic beats that recalled dolphins chattering on a ocean breeze to surprisingly Depeche Mode influenced tracks if only they had just polished off an ounce of the finest, blue, New Mexican amphetamines. I couldn’t help but come away impressed with Brothertiger and recommend checking out his Vision Tunnels EP available for only $2.50 on Bandcamp (here).

I don’t pretend to know anything about Teen Daze and his unique outlook on the chillwave genre. His 2010 gem, Four More Years, came out last May to critical acclaim. The album invokes a strong summertime vibe of watching the sun slowly fade over a mountainous skyline and was certainly worth all its hype. Teen Daze didn't stop there and continued to churn out two more similar collections during the year with Beach Dreams and My Bedroom Floor. You'd think he'd slow down but just this past July came the Tour EP, evolving his slow melodies from the previous offerings while cranking it up a few notches. I thought I was ready to take a ride on the Xanax highway (figuratively, of course) when he hit the stage but what came next was a multicolored explosion of speed fueled looping grooves and synthesizer boards pyrotechnics dialing up his songs to 11. The crowd was enthusiastic and Jamison, the single name mastermind behind Teen Daze, brought an energy to the stage that his predecessors couldn't match. If you are dying for more, don't worry, Teen Daze just won't quit. His next EP will be out September 13 and is available for pre-order now (here).

After 3 hours of furious Sunday night musical entertainment, my experience left me pondering many things including: (1) what did I just hear? (2) where can I acquire more of these delectable sounds? (3) how much is it gonna cost me to fix my phone [Note: $90] and (4) why do they serve such warm whiskey shots at Glasslands? While I continue to wrap my mind around these topics, I can tell you one thing. Teen Daze is creating a soundtrack to your summer daydreams and never-ending night adventures.

Year Zero - Official Trailer

YEAR ZERO TRAILER from GLOBE on Vimeo.

via Surfing Magazine: YEAR ZERO is a modern take on high performance surfing set in a post-apocalyptic world, reminiscent of Mad Max or an HG Wells novel. It tells a story of a band of renegade surfers, including Dion Agius, Yadin Nicol, Nate Tyler, Taj Burrow, CJ Hobgood and Damien Hobgood, on a road trip through the apocalypse in search of waves, women, and good times. The film’s original soundtrack by BLACK MOUNTAIN, whom VICE MAGAZINE has called, “One of the best rock n’ roll bands of our time,” creates a sonic landscape that fully delivers the immersive experience that director Joe G envisioned for the film.

The film was shot on location around the world entirely in super 16mm film and offers a unique concept with stunning visuals that capture the essence of surfing in a novel setting. YEAR ZERO follows GLOBE’S previous award winning productions such as SECRET MACHINE and NEW EMISSIONS OF LIGHT AND SOUND and is undoubtedly GLOBE’S largest film project to date.
World Premiere coming August 3rd to Costa Mesa. More from 0000.
